I would like to introduce you to a great FREE plugin/addon to your browsers called Cooliris. This application resides within your browser [Internet explorer, mozilla firefox, google chrome] and loads up a neat 3d interface when you are viewing pictures.
Of course it is always on passive mode and does not pop up until u manually start it.
It support mouse wheel scroll zoom-in and zoom-out, 3 display modes, and whole lotta options to fine tune it your way.

Viewing images on Full Black background in a 3d space feels great! The only sad part is, wish cooliris was made a standalone image viewer!
